‘Tis the Season for Cookies and Crafts

Baking mountains of cookies and creating homemade ornaments for the tree always sounds like a good idea, until the kitchen is covered in clouds of flour and half-finished crafts are waiting to be cleaned up. Here are two easy, no-mess projects we guarantee will be fun and doable.

Christmas Tree Brownies

These adorable trees from One Little Project are perfect stocking stuffers, favors, or gifts—and they can be made with store-bought brownies, too.

What You’ll Need:

Food Coloring

Candy Canes

  1. Bake brownies (or purchase store-bought).
  2. Cut into triangles.
  3. Insert candy canes into the bottom of brownie triangles to create a “trunk.”
  4. Add food coloring to icing until it’s the desired shade of green; decorate brownies.
  5. Add sprinkles.

Cinnamon Applesauce Heart Ornament

These simple ornaments from Katy Elliott are made with ingredients you likely already have in the pantry, and will make your home smell like the holidays.

What You’ll Need:

Cloves (optional)

Heart Cookie Cutters

  1. Mix applesauce, cinnamon, and cloves in a bowl.
  2. Roll out dough using additional cinnamon in place of flour so the rolling pin doesn’t stick.
  3. Cut out hearts of assorted shapes using cookie cutters.
  4. Using a skewer make a hole near the top of each heart.
  5. Bake; allow to set overnight.
  6. Loop a string through the top of each heart to finish the ornament.
