Thanksgiving: 10 Reasons to be Grateful

The start of the holiday season is the perfect time to put away those phones and spend some quality family time. Here are our suggestions for some seasonal activities that are guaranteed to bring the whole family together.

  1. Make a hand turkey: Break out construction paper and colored pencils or markers. Have kids trace their outstretched hands, add a pair of eyes, and get to coloring those feathered friends.
  2. Learn to bake a pumpkin pie: With the help of a pre-made shell and a whisk, even your littlest chef can assemble this seasonal favorite.
  3. Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: This iconic parade has been held annually since 1924. Cuddle up on the couch with a blanket or two, and see if you can spot your favorite floats.
  4. Show your gratitude: While that turkey is cooking, have each family member write out five things they’re grateful for on an index card to share during the meal.
  5. A build-your-own sandwich contest: Set all the leftovers out, give each child two slices of bread, and challenge them to build the tallest, most delicious sandwich possible.
  6. Play a game of family flag football: Cut up some old bed sheets, tie them to your waistbands, and divvy up into teams for a bit of family-friendly pigskin.
  7. Buy local for Black Friday: Skip the big box store and head to a local boutique or farmer’s market. The deals are still great, and you might just recognize the shopkeeper.
  8. Get some holiday photos taken: Take advantage of the long weekend and pretty leaves, and take some family photos. Bonus: You can use them on your yearly holiday cards.
  9. Attend a local tree lighting: Nothing says the holidays like hot cider, crisp air, and sparkling lights.
  10. Do a pre-holiday clean: Round up old toys and clothes, and deliver them to a local shelter, religious organization or community center before those gifts start rolling in.
